"The Future"
by Simon Verdon
Our world is ever-changing. The speed of that
change increases daily and it leaves many of us breathless and concerned.
Achieving security and stability has been a major aim of every one of us since
life on Earth began. But there are those who have embraced change...made it
happen...and used it to increase their own security. They learned to control the
future.
Then there are those who hid from change believing that by ignoring it, they
would make change go away. But it didn't - and the future controlled them.
In whatever role we play, we can all influence the future, take part in its
design, and become an important part of it.
To do so, we have to be open minded and put aside our natural belief that the
way things were in the past is how they should always be. We have to be
flexible and accept the ideas of others. Above all, we must have courage -
because the future means change...and change can be frightening.
Each of us will play a different part in shaping the future. We all recognise
those who have created change throughout history - Columbus...George
Washington...Thomas Eddison...the Wright brothers...Amelia Earhart...Eleanor
Roosevelt... Martin Luther-King...John F Kennedy...
But we should not forget that, just like the others, Columbus would have
remained a dreamer without a crew to support him.
Millions of people throughout the course of history have helped to change the
future...the future of organisations...of nations...of the world.
Most of them are just like us. But by opening their minds to the benefits of
change, they have taken control of their future...and gained immeasurably from
it. If you too can see change not as an enemy, but as a valuable friend, you
will control the most valuable prize of all - The Future.
