With all the excitement Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa created in 1998, the superb Ken Griffey Jr. still did not go unnoticed. All he did that year, was hit 56 homers and have the best season of any American League ball player. Like McGwire, Griffey keeps hitting over 50 homers each year and is still a contender to one day break the home run record. One thing is for sure, Ken Griffey Jr. is an incredible all around baseball player. He captured his ninth consecutive Gold Glove award in 1998, and American League record for outfielders.
Like Cal Ripken Jr., Ken Griffey Jr. seemed to grow up on a Major League baseball diamond. The son of former Cincinnati star, Ken Griffey Sr., “Junior” made the Major Leagues at 19 years of age. Playing for the Seattle Mariners, he displayed his raw talent and incredible potential early and often. Griffey became a three hundred hitter and an All Star at age 20 in 1990. His numbers are usually incredible, even though injuries have slowed him down on occasion. Ken hit 49, 56 and 56 homeruns respectively from 1996 to 1998. Junior also hit over .300 eight times before his 30th birthday. Because he is still in his prime with many more seasons ahead of him, nobody knows what kind of numbers Griffey will accumulate before retirement. Will he surpass McGwire or Henry Aaron in homeruns? We’ll just have to wait and see.
