Joe Namath will always be remembered as the cocky young quarterback of the New York Jets who predicted his team would beat the awesome Baltimore Colts in Superbowl III, then made his prediction come true. Broadway Joe as he was known, had a long and illustrious career, putting up huge numbers for passing yardage and touchdowns every year. Considered to be one of the best quarterbacks ever, Joe was also very colorful and hugely popular in the sixties and seventies.
Joe played his college football at Alabama under the legendary Paul "Bear" Bryant. In 1964, Joe led Alabama to the NCAA championship. Chosen in the first round of the 1965 draft by the Jets, Joe was named Rookie of the Year after his first season. He was an AFL All Star in 1965, 66, 68, and 69. Coming into Super Bowl III in 1969, Joe guaranteed his Jets would upset the heavily favored Baltimore Colts of the NFL. Joe played brilliantly in Super Bowl III, throwing repeatedly into the teeth of the feared Colt defense- and pulled off his upset. From that day on, "Broadway Joe" graced the covers of publications such as Time, Life, and Sports Illustrated.
Although he never won another Super Bowl, Namath did put up huge number during his 15 year career. He holds the record for number of yards passing (4007) during a 14 game season. Known for his leadership, courage, and superb passing touch, Namath is still very popular to this day.
