Cal Ripken Jr. is the acknowledged “Iron Man” of Major League Baseball. His overall excellence and incredible endurance guarantee that Cal will be in the Hall of Fame after retirement. Cal grew up as the son of an Oriole coach, so he was exposed to Major League Baseball at a very early age. This also gave the Baltimore Orioles a chance to see his talent. Cal worked his way up through the Minor Leagues, and in 1982 he became the Orioles’ shortstop for good. On May 29th of that year, his legendary streak began. Ripken played well, was the perennial All-Star, and by 1989 he assumed the role of Orioles’ team leader after the departure of long time Oriole Eddie Murray. Cal tried to model himself after Murray in the way he handled the press and by staging himself as the teams’ role model. In 1991, Ripken won the American League MVP award for the second time and was also the MVP of the All-Star Game.
On September 5, 1995, Cal finally tied Lou Gehrig’s record for consecutive games. The next night, he broke that record by playing in his 2,131st straight game. The streak continued until 1998, when Cal voluntarily took himself out of the line-up. Known for his hitting and defense, Cal Ripken Jr., future Hall of Famer, is still going strong.
