In Shakespeare's time, a winter's tale was simply a fanciful story, made all the more charming by its improbability. The Bard's version, originally presented circa 1611, is a charming romantic comedy, but with undertones of tragedy. The story concerns the destructive jealousy of King Leontes of Sicilia, who suspects his wife of an adulterous affair with Polixenes, King of Bohemia. Written toward the end of Shakespeare's life, the play reflects some of the bitterness and disillusionment the poet experienced in his declining years, yet its happy ending suggests that perhaps Shakespeare had achieved some peace and reconciliation of his own.Unabridged republication of a standard edition.
