In Shakespeare's time, a winter's tale was simply a fanciful story, made all the more charming by its improbability. The Bard's version, originally presented circa 1611, is a charming romantic comedy, but with undertones of tragedy. The story concerns the destructive jealousy of King Leontes of Sicilia, who suspects his wife of an adulterous affair with Polixenes, King of Bohemia.
