We begin with the death of Bobby's parents in a car wreck. After the wake, he loses his memory up to that event. His is raised by his Aunt Iris where the mountains meet the ocean. She loveshim, and when he becomes older, reveals to him in the form of a Platonic dialog that loss can be overcome by becoming more a part of being. After her death, he feels lost and estranged from society, mainly due to his Uncle John's rantings about consumerism and the destruction of nature, and he leaves on his quest. There is a shift here from realism to a mix of realism and fantasy.His beginning adventures are flights from his feelings of loss by being convinced by a book that he'll be a leader of a new culture of human automatons, by believing an angel who tells him he's on the wrong plane.
