Severely wounded at the Battle of Chancellorsville, nineteen-year-old Walter Dunn of the 11th New Jersey Infantry was taken to Baltimore. Left behind on the field were precious letters froma young woman in his hometown of Plainfield. He wrote to her again, as soon as he was able, of his blood-soaked duties as a surgeon's assistant when the Gettysburg casualties rolled in.
