This magnificent book presents 400 largely unpublished pieces of ancient Iranian copper and bronze art of the Archaemenid, Parthian and Sassanian periods, dating from 3,000 BC to AD 750. The objects come from the areas of Luristan, Amlash, Kauraz and Urartu on the vast Iranian plateau which in ancient times extended far beyond Iran's present day boundaries.Dr. Benjamin Mahboubian (1868-1968), the father of the present owner of the collection upon which this book is based, was one of the first archaeologists to excavate in Iran at the turn of the century. The staggering breadth ofthe collection has necessitated some selection. The beauty and quality of these pieces, many of which depict mythical beasts and animal forms, is evident in the reproductions throughout the book.
